Haptic actuators come with Immersion Corp license

There are four sizes, from 29 x 21mm to 44 x 37mm, that can provide forces up to 120N.

Not immediately obvious from the photo, each transducer us in two parts: the top left part is a separate laminated metal bar designed to be attached to the touch plate with two screws, and the rest of it is a laminated U-core with a coil designed to be screwed to a solid mount – with a device-dependent gap of ~1mm between them.

“The actuators are perfect for rugged, noisy environments where audio tones may not be adequate to communicate actuation to the user,” according to Vishay. “Vishay has an agreement with Immersion that allows customers that purchase the Vishay IHPT a pass-through license to use the IHPT with direct licensing with Immersion. This greatly simplifies IP management for the customer.”

These licences are not comprehensive – exclusions include devices for gaming, virtual reality and “sexual wellness”, according to Vishay.

One of the parts, IHPT1411AFELR73ABA (black in photo), is AEC-Q200 qualified and intended for electronic shift controls, steering wheels and other in-vehicle controls.

The other four (table below) are expected to be used in factory automation, consumer appliances and audio studios, as well as in medical, military and avionics equipment.

Vibrations are produced by applying a pulse or pulses at between 8 and 16V amplitude, and response is in 5ms. As an example, the automotive version with a 0.75 mm gap can impart 6g acceleration to a 0.5kg load after a 12V 5ms pulse, said Vishay.

Operation is across -40 to +105°C.

Coils (see table) offer inductance down 1.8mH and 1Ω, and their dielectric can withstand 150Vdc.
