Whitepaper: ON Semi – Creating an Energy Harvesting Zigbee Green Power Switch for Smart Homes and Buildings

Whitepaper: ON-Semi - Creating an Energy Harvesting Zigbee Green Power Switch for Smart Homes and BuildingsThe benefits provided by wireless, battery-free switches are obvious and address top concerns of IoT manufacturers – ease of implementation and power consumption. These devices offer unparalleled flexibility for deployment within buildings because they do not require any hardwiring. They also remove the maintenance hassles and environmental impact of battery replacement and disposal. Both Bluetooth Low Energy and Zigbee Green Power are candidates for such a Challenge. We introduce how to implement Zigbee Green power Protocol in an energy efficient way with ON Semiconductor NCS36510 System on Chip.

Even if Zigbee Green Power protocol is natively created for supporting ultra-low energy budget, none has been capable so far to create an Energy harvester based Wall Switch that also implement a LED acknowledgement of the command from the system (the Zigbee 3.0 Proxy).

It is interesting to have a look at such implementations as they unveil intrinsic performance of the multiple elements of such systems, but also how the combination of system expertise and solution vision help define a real innovation and solve the problem of Battery replacement in wireless wall switches.

In this white paper we review the selection of:
