Picture of the Day: The Ascent of Storage

A bit of fun for a Friday: a comic t-shirt depicting the Ascent of Storage.

Picture of the Day: The Ascent of Storage

It made me laugh, but I wasn’t the only one to notice the missing elements. Where was the big floppy, let alone the tape reels of yore?…

It’s from a tweet – by @duconspace – and check out some of the comments, too:

“Missing Link… 5.25 Floppy?”

“Just remember, if you see the cloud running away, it’s probably because it’s about to rain on your backup plans!️”

And, many times, there is this reminder:

“There is no ‘cloud’ just a stranger’s computer”

What do you think should also be included on the t-shirt? And do you have any alternative designs? Leave a comment below.

  1. Ha. That’s real computing history, sir! (sorry)

I think the ‘filing cabinet’ is meant to cover all paper/card based inputs…but a tape reel would insert another circular element to the design.

    • There was fanfold paper tape available though I’ve never seen any.

There’s a reel of metalised mylar “paper” tape down the garage: it was retired because it gave everyone static shocks when it was used and made the ATE operators a bit twitchy.

  2. Aha! So it didn’t post last time.

Where’s the punched paper tape and punched cards?

    We should be told!

Paper tape was ok so long as you didn’t step on the end as it went through the reader.

Punched cards were great until the rubber band rotted whereupon one was grateful for the index numbers on columns 73 to 80, particularly if it was a binary card deck.
