TI claims industry’s fastest 14bit ADC

Texas instruments is claiming the fastest 14bit ADC yet with one that works at 3Gsample/s, delivering “an instantaneous 1.5GHz-per-channel bandwidth, enabling engineers to implement wideband in-phase and quadrature-component receivers beyond 2.5 GHz”, said the firm.

The dual-channel ADC32RF45 can be used for direct RF signal conversion up to 4GHz,” said TI. “The first in a new data converter family, it eliminates up to four intermediate-frequency down-conversion stages in multi-band receivers.”

For multi-band digital down-conversion, each ADC channel can be connected to a dual-band, digital down-converter (DDC) with up to three independent, 16-bit numerically-controlled oscillators (NCOs) per DDC for phase-coherent frequency hopping. The ADC is equipped with front-end peak and RMS power detectors and alarms to support external automatic gain control (AGC) algorithms.

Applications are expected in radar, software-defined radio, aerospace and defence, test, measurement, wireless communication, and radio astronomy.

Noise-spectral density of -155dBFS/Hz, is claimed, as is a signal-to-noise ratio of 58.5dB with 1.8GHz on the input.

Volume production is planned for the third quarter of 2016 10x10mm 72pin QFN packaging.

TI ADC32RF45EVM - TI claims industry's fastest 14bit ADCThere is an evaluation kit (ADC32RF45EVM, pictured), and the firm suggest its ADC be used alongside the LMH3404 7GHz dual-channel differential amplifier, LMX2592 9.8GHz frequency synthesiser and LMK04828 clock-jitter cleaner. “In addition, the 66AK2L06 processor offers an alternative to FPGAs,” said TI.

The device will be at the International Microwave Symposium next week in San Francisco.

  1. For the love of Pete, I sure hope this article is reporting on the last generation of military signal processing capabilities since this information is a big leg up for enemies designing competing military equipment.
