The Android One smartphone design is targeted at what Google terms “super-midmarket”, in emerging markets such as India.
The first set of Android One devices features MediaTek’s MT6582 mobile system-on-chip based on quad ARM Cortex A7 processors. There is integrated multimedia hardware (audio, video, graphics and camera) as well as UMTS Release 8 modem capabilities.
“By collaborating extensively with Google on Android One, we are enabling a total solution that encompasses hardware, software and testing, for manufacturers and brands globally,” said Mohit Bhushan, vice-president of US business development at MediaTek.
