Mobile chipset firm MediaTek powers Android One

Google is partnering with mobile chipset firm MediaTek to encourage manufacturers to bring lower cost Android smartphones to market, writes Richard Wilson.

The Android One smartphone design is targeted at what Google terms “super-midmarket”, in emerging markets such as India.

The first set of Android One devices features MediaTek’s MT6582 mobile system-on-chip based on quad ARM Cortex A7 processors. There is integrated multimedia hardware (audio, video, graphics and camera) as well as UMTS Release 8 modem capabilities.


“By collaborating extensively with Google on Android One, we are enabling a total solution that encompasses hardware, software and testing, for manufacturers and brands globally,” said Mohit Bhushan, vice-president of US business development at MediaTek.
