Surrey launches space industry MBA programme

Surrey University’s experience with space research is well known (for example, there is its Surrey Space Centre (SSC), in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (FEPS), and the work of Surrey Satellite). Well, the university is now pioneering an MBA programme focused on the needs of the space industry.

According to the university, as of 2010/2011, the UK space sector contributed £9.1 billion to the national economy. And a growth target established by the Innovation Growth Strategy, set out in 2010, suggests that the UK space sector will grow to 10% of the global market, which is estimated to be worth around £400 billion…

“In recent years, the importance of the Space Industry to the UK economy has become very clear,” said Professor Craig Underwood, Deputy Director of the Surrey Space Centre.

“This new initiative will enable engineers to gain the business skills they need to become space entrepreneurs, and also give business leaders the technical background they need to fully exploit this key economic growth area.”

Stuart Martin, CEO of the Satellite Applications Catapult, added:

“The Catapult believes that many of the technologies and applications that will help the UK reach its 2030 growth target will emerge from entrepreneurs and innovators studying at our universities today. We are delighted to be able to support this initiative, and look forward to working with many of these students and graduates in the future.”

Surrey Business School and the Space Applications Catapult have agreed that scholarships of up to 75% will be available for would-be space professionals.

Anyone interested in applying should go to the Surrey MBA web site at www.surrey.ac.uk/mba and follow the normal application process, indicating whether they wish to apply for a Space Industry Scholarship. Places will be restricted so early application/enquiry is recommended.
