CES: Red micro-LED displays from AlInGaP aimed at AR glasses

Micledi Microdisplays has revealed red micro-LED demonstrators as CES today, using AlInGaP as a starting material.

The spin-out from Belgian research lab Imec is aiming to make displays for augmented reality glasses, and is working on micro-LED displays in all three primary colours, including an alternative red display based on GaN. It also has proprietary micro-lenses that allow full-colour three-panel display modules to be made.

“There is no one-size-fits-all solution for AR glasses,” said company CEO Sean Lord. “This achievement, with our previously announced blue, green and red GaN micro-LEDs, opens the door to a broader offering of display module performance parameters which enables Micledi to serve customers developing AR glasses from medium to high resolution and medium to high brightness.”

Its GaN red is centred at 620nm (orange-red) and has a full-width-half-max under <50nm.

The AlInGaP red is redder at 653nm (it says “Ferrari-red”) and has a FWHM under 9nm. It is “free of arsenide, CMOS-compatible and designed with a new structure as compared to standard GaN micro-LEDs”, according to the company, which is planning to use 3D integration, 300mm silicon-based processing and a proprietary asic to make self-contained monolithic AR displays.
