Tiny dual IO-Link transceiver has dc-dc converter and surge protection

Intended to fit inside the end of industrial data cables, Maxim has unveiled a dual IO-Link transceiver that includes a dc-dc converter and surge – claiming it to be both the smallest and most power-efficient available.

MAX22513-block

Called MAX2251, the buck regulator supplies up to 300mA of load current and has an adjustable output from 2.5V to 12V). Switching is a choice of 921kHz(typ) or 1.229MHz(typ) and claimed efficiency is 80%. There are also has two internal linear regulators, generating 5V and 3.3V, supplying up to 50mA.

MAX22513 blockLow-on resistance drivers (C/Q and DO/DI) have selectable driver current limits (50 – 250mA) and over-current protection to reduce power dissipation in small sensor applications. PNP, NPN, and push-pull modes are available. Typical on-resistance is 2Ω.

MAX22513-ref-design-MAXREFDES171All four IO pins (V24, C/Q, DO/DI, and GND), are reverse voltage protected, short circuit protected, and get the built-in surge protection, which is to ±1kV/500Ω.

It can be controlled over SPI or I2C, with both full and half-duplex SPI supported. An internal oscillator provides a clock source to a host microcontroller for IO-Link communication.

Package options are WLP package (4.1 x 2.1mm) or 28pin TQFN-EP (3.5 x 5.5mm), and both operates from -40°C to +125°C.

MAX22513EVKIT# evaluation kit is available, as is MAXREFDES171# reference design (pictured) which has ±1.2kV/500Ω surge protection. See details below.
