The laser is ruggedised for field use and miniaturising it allows for rapid placement in tactical situations, says the U.S. defence giant.

The 10kW class high-energy laser measures 12 cubic feet. Weighing under 200 pounds, the company highlights that it enables carrying and installation by as few as two personnel (“nearly the size of a mini fridge”).

“By miniaturizing this advanced capability, we are expanding the reach of our technology and continuing to lead the way in high-energy lasers,” said Robert Fleming, vp and general manager, strategic space systems, Northrop Grumman.

For integration with other subsystems, the laser is part of Northrop’s directed energy portfolio – high-energy laser systems providing advanced beam control for targeting threats at extended ranges (defending against rockets, artillery and mortars, for example).
