Bezos rocket aims for Mars

NASA has given contracts to Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket company to put two satellites into orbit round Mars.

Launch date is scheduled for August 2024. It will be the first time that Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket has been used but as the contract only worth $79 million, NASA is prepared to take the risk.

The mission is called ESCAPADE (Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers).

The satellites weigh about half a ton each. New Glenn, which is  320 feet high with a 23-foot diameter  can lift a payload of 45 metric tons. Its first launch was planned four years ago.

Elon Musk has so far made all the running on Mars but his last two rockets aimed at getting there blew up. He once called Bezos a “dilettante” when it came to space. Bezos will no doubt be hoping to prove him wrong.
