Called the RSL10 Smart Shot Camera, it is intended to add “the power of [cloud] AI-based image recognition to low-power IoT endpoints, such as surveillance cameras, restricted areas, factory automation, smart agriculture and smart homes”, according to the company. “A companion smartphone application [iOS, GooglePlay] provides a user interface for the platform and acts as the gateway to cloud-based AI-enabled object recognition services.”
On the board is On’s ARX3A0 360 frame/s mono camera module (centre of board), its RSL10 Bluetooth LE system-in-package, and motion and environment sensors. Power and battery management is also included. The camera controller is a SPCV1100A from SunplusIT.
“Using the camera, developers can create an end-point that automatically sends an image to the cloud for analysis when triggered by various elements including time or an environmental change, such as light or temperature,” said On.
It can also operate in a low power mode while monitoring a specific part of its field of view, automatically taking an image when the scene’s contents change. The image is then sent to the cloud for processing, using AI to determine the contents of the image and then taking the appropriate action.
The image data is transferred throgh Bluetooth to a gateway, then on to the cloud.
Single-lithium-cell operation is possible “for extended periods of time”. Minimum active power is said to be 3.2mW.
Applications envisaged include hard-hat-cams, shopping trolley viewing for smart check-out, monitoring small children in vehicle rear seats and scanning food cupboards to generate shopping lists.
