5V load switch includes reverse-blocking and current limiting

Nexperia has introduced its first 5V load switch IC, which operates across 2.5 – 5.5V with 110mA to 2.5A current limiting.

The 2 x 2mm NPS4053, as it will be know, is optimised use in portable devices such as notebook computers, desktops and docking stations, and automotive infotainment systems – it is UL 62368 recognised and there is an AEC-Q100 qualified automotive version.

Typical on-resistance of the internal p-channel mosfet is 55mΩ with 5.5V on the input, 65mΩ at 3.6V and 80mΩ at 2.5V.

Current limit is set by a resistor (soft-start is included) and an open-drain flag output is pulled low during over-current, over-temperature and reverse-voltage conditions.

Under-voltage lock-out is included, and there is an enable pad which will drop consumption to 1 µA when a logic low is present.

Vin-Vout can range across ±6V, although no pad can be taken more than 300mV below the ground pin.

The device is reverse-blocking: there is no parasitic body diode to conduct current from output to input, and when the output voltage exceeds the input voltage (by 75mV for 500ns), the internal mosfet it automatically turned off.

The company points out that at least 120µF of capacitance is required on the output for USB port applications, or as much capacitance as required to meet expected output transients in other applications.

Packaging is 2 x 2 x 0.75mm lead-less HWSON6 (SOT8044-1, 6pad, 0.65mm), whose thermal pad needs to be connected to ground externally.

Operation is across -40 to +125°C.

“Load switches play a crucial role in managing current and voltage in a controlled manner from source to the load,” said the company. “In a typical power chain, the NPS4053 is commonly positioned closest to the load for power sequencing and inrush-current control, and shutting off power islands to conserve power.”
