Secure connections from STM32H5 MCUs to Amazon and Microsoft clouds

STMicroelectronics has announced software to simplify connecting its STM32H5 microcontrollers to Amazon’s AWS cloud and Microsoft’s Azure IoT Hub

X-CUBE-AWS-H5 and X-CUBE-AZURE-H5 are expansion packages for ST’s STM32Cube development tools, and both contains a set of libraries and application examples.

They are built on the FreeRTOS real-time operating system and ST’s ‘Secure Manager’ embedded security software.

Of the Azure package ST said: “The sample application shows secure device-to-cloud connectivity with Azure IoT Hub, including network configuration and data publishing. The application handles Azure messages, methods, and twin update commands.”

The STM32H5 Discovery kit can be used with the package to securely connect to AWS IoT Core.

STM32H5 devices have Arm’s security-enabled Cortex-M33 core, and are aimed at applications certified to PSA level 3 and SESIP3.

“Devices are programmed with their own immutable identity at the ST factory,” said ST, adding regarding the AWS package: “Combined with  Secure Manager, this simplifies registering smart devices to AWS cloud and removes the need for infrastructure otherwise necessary to keep the identities of IoT objects secret during their production. Remote provisioning and administration of credentials will also be available via third-party service providers, during production of devices and in the field.”

Secure Manager adds isolation that allows the intellectual property of multiple owners to be protected – known as ‘multitenant IP protection’, said ST. “This is a perfect fit for edge AI use cases, where models are running on the edge, on devices, protected by the Secure Manager, and further trained and securely updated via the cloud.”
