Supercapacitor modules at 9, 18 and 30V

Cornell Dubilier has introduced supercapacitor modules for use at 9, 18 or 30V.

“The DSM series modules are offered in packs with 3, 6 or 10 cells in series, and capacitance values range from 0.15 to 36.6F,” according to New Yorker Electronics, which is stocking the parts. “Unlike lithium-ion batteries, there is no charge-discharge cycle degradation and no risk of thermal runaway.”

Connection is via a Molex Mini-Lock and operation is over -40 to +65°C for 9V, 18V or 30V, which can be extended up to +85°C of voltage is limited to 7.5, 15 or 25V respectively.

Life at 65°C and rated voltage is 1,000 hours. At 25°C, life between rated voltage and half rated voltage is 500,000 cycles.

Cell balancing is integrated.

Picking the 18V 5.8F DSM585Q018W075PB almost at random, it measures 39 x 100 x 17.5mm and weighs 64g. Equivalent series resistance is 303mΩ, 1sec peak current 18.93A (7.76A for 5s) and leakage 3mA.

Applications are foreseen in MRI systems, GPS, industrial backup and automated guided vehicles.

Custom modules with different form factors, mounting, cell balancing, protection and connectivity are also available.
