Ultra-short pulse materials processing lasers for electronics manufacture

Trumpf has revealed two ultra-short pulsed lasers for electronics manufacturing.

Trumpf TruMicro 2000 manufacturing laser

“Ultrashort pulsed lasers see frequent use in electronics manufacturing, where they serve to produce printed circuit boards, displays and the like,” according to the company.

There are two versions, one at 100W and he other at 200W

The 100W laser (left) becomes the most powerful model in the company’s ‘TruMicro 2000′ industrial ultra-short pulse fibre laser series. “Parameters such as pulse duration, repetition rate and pulse energy can be adjusted within milliseconds, and individual pulses’ energy and duration remain remarkably stable,” said Trumpf, which sees these being used to machine surfaces and to mark glass, plastics and corrosion-resistant metals, as well as tp cut medical products such as stents.

The 200W laser is a TruMicro 6000 femtosecond laser in which the active medium is a slab-style crystal in which light is amplified as it zig-zags between its two end faces. “The slab’s advantage is that this active medium is very conducive to cooling, which enables high pulse energies at high repetition rates,” said Trumpf. “With pulse energies of several millijoules, this is an excellent tool for modifying glass up to six millimeters thick, and for drilling.”

Both are infra-red lasers, whose beams can be converted to green and ultraviolet wavelengths while maintaining beam quality.

The lasers may also be used with an ‘LLK-U’ fiber optic cable. Based on hollow-core fibres, these cables enables steer laser light along a simple stable path from beam source to optics without needing deflection mirrors.

Trumpf is based in Germany, and has a UK showroom in Luton.
